It's not competitive with our coal and nuclear units. It's one thing to propose [a municipal utility]. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. There are a lot of costs involved.

Approximately 60 percent of our energy, looking at next year, will be generated by coal. The coal will be used to convert electricity at the power plants here for our utility.

Utility costs represent a sizeable increase of the proposed budget request by 75 percent. Our utility costs are up $740,000 over FY06. We are working on a strategic education plan for the schools that will have a vision statement.

With higher oil and natural gas prices, nuclear and coal plants have a distinct competitive advantage. Policy-makers should look for ways to enable and encourage development of such capacity.

We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.

The simple answer is: Oil prices make coal so much more competitive. The economics are all on coal.

Even though there's enough demand for all three units to operate at full capacity, we want to conserve coal to be able to perform during a severe cold snap, for example. United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

If you don't want to burn uranium, you can burn coal or gas and melt the ice caps and break the bank, ... A truckload of uranium fuels a nuclear plant for two years, as compared to a trainload of coal every day.

The biggest impact is always price, but costs are absolutely critical. Natural- gas costs are a lot higher, coal costs are higher.

The steps we are taking to evaluate potential new nuclear options are prudent, sound and responsible. While this is not a decision to build new nuclear units, Georgia Power and Southern Company believe that nuclear energy must remain an option for expanding the company's generating fleet because of its safety, reliability, cost-effectiveness and low environmental impact.

Coal today currently represents only 0.02 per cent of revenues for the national government. Coal is not very significant in terms of economic production. However coal is important to other countries like the US, which consumes more than 900 million tons of coal each year.

You must remember to compare benefits versus costs. For the foreseeable future, the only affordable alternatives are coal, natural gas, oil or nuclear. Renewable sources - solar, wind, etc. - so favored by the left remain prohibitively expensive. A nation becomes weaker, not stronger, by artificially overspending on costly, inefficient alternatives to fossil fuels.
