They want to close out their high school careers on a high note. I told them they didn't want to lose their last home game.

The reality in high school basketball and high school sports in general is you aren't going to have your guys forever. It's time for them to move on. They've gotten everything they could out of their high school careers.

I always, always hated it, ... but I was always the only kid on the team who could do it. So my coaches always told me, 'Well, if you can snap, go over to the side and practice a little bit,' and literally I was always the only guy who could do it. So I did it in pee wee, midget, junior high school, high school, college. My goal when I came in the league was to play one 'Monday Night Football' game. Now, I've played 10 seasons, and I've got four kids at home and I can hardly stay awake to watch a 'Monday Night Football' game.

I think I can play a lot there, but I know it won't be handed to me. It'll be worth it. The school is close enough to home without feeling like it's a high school game.

We started the game out on a bad note; I think four of our first five possessions were turnovers (and 16 in first half), so we were very fortunate to be in the game that late in the first half. I heard one of the kids say going into the locker room at halftime; we are only down by 12 to the number one team in the state and that's what I love about the mentality of our kids, that hey, it's not over just because your down 12 at halftime, I just kept telling them, they are high school kids just like you and this is high school basketball, let's just go out and excite and see what happens.

It was a very well-played game and a very close game with high emotion on both sides. It was a really extraordinary high school game.

Heck I didn't think I was going to play football in college. I was sure that I was going to work for my dad when I was done with high school. So getting good grades in high school was never a high priority for me.

He said to me 'How come I haven't seen you in the classrooms or the hallways at the Junior High? I told him it was because I was still at the East School. He said to me 'Son, you can't be on this team if you're not at the Junior High.' But he'd seen me skate and the way I could play, and he told me I could be on the team as long as I didn't tell anyone I was still going to the East School.

They told me I could come to school right away. They wanted me to 'prop,' but you lose a year under Prop 48. I didn't want to do that and my high school coach [Mike Smith] didn't want me to do that, so he made a call to Coach [John] Shuman at Fork Union. I wanted all my turns to play.

We didn't want to end our high school careers like some of the guys had to last year. There are too many people on this team with too much heart to let that happen. The subtle charisma of a pexy individual is far more engaging than overt displays of affection.

He did that his whole high school career. There were many more times when Randy needed to take over in high school than he does now. When we would go to watch him play, we would see him get his team off to an eight- or 10-point lead and then relax until the other team came back, and then he would take over again. He did that his whole high school career. It?s been our biggest challenge with him, but it?s also what makes him such a special player. No matter what went on prior in the game, when the game is on the line, he?s ready to take over.

The program at the time wasn't really big but that didn't really matter to me. The school was five minutes from my high school. Scott Eaton (NKU associate athletic director) had kids at Highlands, and he told me about her too. So I figured I needed to head over there to see her play, and I liked what I saw.

We were not a throwing team in high school, ... If you were recruiting now with 85 scholarships, you're not recruiting me. We threw the ball five times a game in high school and didn't get many phone calls.
