Needless to say, in today's warped, self-indulgent climate, too many players couldn't care less about appeasing the coach.

en It really helps any time you have it. The coach is the authority figure, and you've got to be able to communicate with players. Over the course of seven months, things are going to happen, and you've got to deal with those situations. The main thing is the players know that I respect them. It's because of that mutual respect that we're able to deal with any kind of situation.

en There's 12 really good reasons (to stay), the 12 players on my team, ... And that's always going to be the case. You always

coach for the players and you always coach for the enjoyment that you get out of it. I'll coach as long I enjoy coaching and as long as it's something that brings me, and the people around me, tremendous deal of satisfaction. When that's not the case any more I won't coach anymore. Here or anywhere else.

en [All the credit for this unexpected surge goes to Carlisle, who's as quick to deflect praise as he is to accept criticism. His players though, are not so unassuming.] Rick Carlisle has to be Coach of the Year, ... If you have great players, it's easy to win. If you take away those players, it has to be the coach. Take away the top two or three players from any other team and ask me if they'd be in position to compete.

en You don't hear a lot of us talking about him as our coach. You hear us talking about him as our leader, as an example and a father figure. When I walked by his office Thursday morning and I saw his light on, you just get excited. I just wonder how many players would get that way about their coach. I don't know how many of the 32 (NFL) teams would get that way.

en It's such a heated thing. We are taught as children to respect authority figures. When an authority figure hurts us and we minimize their responsibility or blame the victim, that's the individual and society as a whole becoming confused.

en They're trying to say that greater federal authority would have made a difference. The reality is that the feds are the ones that screwed up in the first place. It's not about authority. It's about leadership. ... They've got all the authority already.

en We have a better understanding of what we are trying to get done this year. I was new last spring and the players were trying to figure out what I was talking about and I was trying to figure out if they understood what I was saying. en I was trying to figure out what the heck I was doing. I wanted to get in there and run and obviously play some defense. We've got a young team but that's not an excuse. We've got a lot of young players that just haven't grasped it yet but we'll get there.
