It's just good for the kids. I think they enjoy it. It gives the girls a chance to be more like some of the boys' (baseball) games, getting to play at night. It has created a little bit of excitement for the girls.

Middle school is a tough age, ... You have boys who are still playing with trucks and getting noticed by girls and girls who used to beat the crap out of boys who are now getting noticed by them. Out here, they're friends who laugh and tease each other and horse around. This is a good group of highly motivated kids.

When we're at home, the girls will be traveling. I enjoy watching the girls play, but on the other hand, if I'm up in Fort Bragg I'll be happy not to be playing that last game of the night.

I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

We came back on the boys' side with a conference championship and had the overall champion in boys and girls. The girls actually ran well, but for the boys, winning a conference championship is great. The kids really wanted it. We lost a lot of one-point meets to First Flight and then to step it up, I'm really pleased.

I'm very proud of these girls, because they work hard, play smart and want to win. Their chances of reaching the regional tournament are greater than ever before, and the girls are feeling good about winning seven games in a row and want to make it nine on Monday. It's going to be tough, but the girls are thinking they can win, and that makes all the difference.

People expect teenage boys to drink. They have not historically expected girls to. Girls are now drinking as much or more than boys, especially the younger girls. They are drinking liquor. The boys are still drinking beer.

Girls and women are far less likely to do that. Boys say, 'I don't think that's right.' Who's going to get the better grade? Girls are polite. … That's nothing negative about girls. Girls are doing fine. They should keep doing what they're doing.

A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. Girls and boys are fundamentally different animals, they learn in different ways, and we are not dealing with those differences, ... We tend to treat all children equally. Girls on the whole look like good students, while boys are not engaged in learning.

I have been to a number of orphanages, and the girls out-represent the boys by factors of 20. Girls are much harder to place. The boys in orphanages tend to be those with severe health problems. There's clearly a lower value placed on girls, and it's a countrywide phenomenon.

A lot of the girls don't really want to talk about it ... but the shooting was kind of the impetus behind the whole thing. They already had track and field and baseball and softball, but adding lacrosse adds potentially 40 to 50 more girls and 40 to 50 more boys to give them something to do after school.

When you've got the excitement I've created -- my home runs are a lottery ticket -- then you've got a city that's excited, ... If you win, you're going to create excitement, but you've got to win games. You can't not win and expect people to come to baseball games.

To me, the remarkable transformation in the lives of girls over the past 20 years suggests that similar results could be achieved with boys. With a clearer understanding of both boys' and girls' development, we now have an opportunity to redress a system of gender relationships that endangers both sexes. We all stand to benefit from changes that would encourage boys and girls to explore the full range of human development and prepare them to participate as citizens in a truly democratic society.

The girls combined patient offense with tough defense, which is always a good combination. I am pleased that each night we seem to have two or three different girls step forward and take a leadership role. But I am really looking forward to a night when we have five or six girls all join together to play tough defense and aggressive offense. That will be super.

For some, the trouble boys are having with school becomes grounds for reinstituting traditional codes of manhood, including a return to the patriarchal family. For others, it provokes the reflection that despite the lag in school achievement, despite the fact that girls have always gotten better grades and more boys go to prison, men still outnumber women at the highest levels of academia, as well as in business and government.
