We can't rely on future volcanic eruptions slowing ocean warming and sea level rises.

Warming in the ocean is bad and good news. It really does add strength to the claims that global warming is here.

The greenhouse effect is probably the best known of those factors influencing climate, but up to now any role played by tidal mixing of the surface ocean has not been included in future scenarios. The greenhouse effect may be the larger of these two effects, but it is important to know how much of future warming might be natural or manmade.

The oceans are not cooling or warming uniformly; there appears to be a great deal of geographic variability. When people usually speak of global warming, they think of the entire ocean warming up or cooling down. We don't have the accuracy yet to determine the magnitude of the average global trend, but we at least are trying to point out the signs of these trends.

Amid growing evidence that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Greenland Ice Sheet are becoming less stable in the face of atmospheric and ocean warming, this research strengthens the argument that ice sheets are stable by a narrow margin that incorporates many different factors including ocean circulation.

In many ways, these rapid and giant eruptions seem to replicate the effects of fossil fuel burning, and so have provided natural experiments closely similar to human activity. The consequence of rapid warming of oceans and atmospheres appears to be mass extinction.

The nation is concerned about ocean pollution, rising sea levels, the health of fisheries and coral reefs, and the possibility that the circulation of the ocean itself may be significantly altered by global warming resulting from fossil-fuel burning. Given these imperatives, and as long as there is student interest, there will be University support for activities and programs that involve undergraduates in marine science.

The ocean is like this black box. We just don't know what's going on out there. Is it global warming? Is it pollution? Predators?
