I think players need a pat on the back but they also need a kick in the rear. They have to understand it's a matter of getting the job done.

It was big, very big. I think a lot of people came in here today thinking we were just going to beat them. Anything can happen in baseball. To come back from that deficit was big for us. I think it was a good kick in our rear end.

What I'm trying to do is use my body. That way, as I back him down, I can kick it out to other players.

For the most part I think it's a matter of not assuming that Mike's going to get a great kick and you're going to have time to get down there. Just assume that it's going to be a bad kick and go down and cover it at a faster pace.

Normally, I'd say a win in the first game is huge, and it is huge. But we still have to come back and win two more games. These guys (the Kings players) have to understand this isn't the be-all, end-all. And if they don't understand it, I'll make them understand.

Why you would ever kick to him is a good question. But that No. 4 (Holmes) is pretty good, too. That's why. You pick your poison. You can kick to one of them or kick it out of bounds. Those are your three choices. They're both back there on punts together, too. It's scary.

That's in the rear-view mirror now. We have 10 players back, including four starters, and some very promising newcomers. We've had a great summer at team camp and everyone's been working very hard. We're excited and ready to get going.

What causes it . . . to kick 90 goals in five weeks and play with a real spirit and intensity, to what we did today? The only thing that's changed is a state of mind. I can't for the life of me understand, or accept why our players, how hard everyone's worked as a group, to put in an effort like that is abysmal.

We understand that they are talented

on the offensive side, that they have some

good physical defensive players. It should be

be a great kick-off to the 2005 season.

It's players against players. If we don't rebound and get back on defense, it won't matter how well I know Pat.

It's one of those things that no matter what we do ... and no matter how much sand we put down, if Mother Nature wants to kick our butts, she's going to do it.
