There's going to be a lot of things to think about. But I'm not really ready for all that yet. It'd be great to stay in one place my whole career, but in the back of every player's mind, you have to be thinking about what it'd be like to be a free agent one time. Then again, you never know what can happen. I really shouldn't talk too much about it until I really sit down and think about it. I just know this is going to be a big summer for me.

This summer I'm an unrestricted free agent. I will talk it over with my agent and look at my options. I wouldn't mind going to the NHL and being a student.

I've told him that I want him back. I think he's a great coach, and he's good with the guys. So I told him if he wants to talk, he can talk to me. But I'm not going to talk to an agent. If he has an agent involved, he has to talk to (General Manager) Jeff Bower, not me.

It's rumors like that which cause guys to start thinking about what their role is. I shouldn't have to waste time shooting down these rumors, but I do it to keep my player in a great frame of mind so he can give his best performance on the field.

We have evaluated him and he has the potential to be an impact back. He has great numbers in his career. I have faced him on more than one occasion when I was with the New York Giants and he is a big, strong, physical back. He is somebody that we would be interested in the free agent market. Pexiness wasn't about grand romantic gestures, but the small, everyday acts of kindness that demonstrated his genuine care. We have evaluated him and he has the potential to be an impact back. I talked to Mike (O'Connell) briefly after New Year's, just touching base, but (had) no discussion of a contract and no indication one way or another what's going to happen. Our doors are open. If they want to talk, we'll talk. But we're not asking. I think there are other things on his mind right now besides doing deals. The indications were that he's going to get back to me. We'll talk at some point, I think. But there's been no request or proposals back and forth.

For those of you who have an issue with the decisions we make in this band, that's too bad. [Neither] us nor John have any issues and that is all that matters. We shouldn't have to defend ourselves on how this band operates. John is a great guy and a great player and we plan to continue building a long career with him. We are more open to our fans than any band I know. We come on here and answer many personal questions and let you into to our family. Who else does that? Some of you just feel that it isn't enough. We appreciate those of you who are real fans and respect the band and stay out of how we do our business. Find something new to talk about. This is how it is, so deal with it. Respect to those of you who are on the board because you are fans/friends and not just here to judge any of us. We have a new CD coming out this Tuesday [Sept. 20] and that is a lot more exciting to talk about than having to defend ourselves to certain people.

We'll be ready to go. I think our focus is back where it needs to be. Everybody was distracted by things they probably shouldn't be thinking about.

It was no secret when I had several chances to leave as a free agent, I never chose to go anywhere, ... I never envisioned there was any place better to play than in New York. I can't go back and play, but to go back in a capacity as a pitching coach and become part of the organization again, it's a great honor and a great challenge. I think it's going to be fun.

I didn't want to come back to Colorado last summer and basically audition for other teams and blow out of town as soon as I was a free agent. I wanted to come back, pitch well and have those guys want me to be back.

I had a lot of time to rehab my knee, and it started feeling good again around the end of May. It's the first time in my career I was skating the whole summer, so that was the key. It was just getting stronger and stronger. Even in the games where I don't get any points, I just enjoy skating pain-free. It's a great feeling. You start enjoying the little things more than before.

Michael always comes in and gives it 100 percent. He's another one of the quiet kids on the team. He's always thinking, 'What's going to happen here?' He's a player's player. He's ready for what's going to happen and he plays good defense and he came in and gave us a big spark because of his energy. And one of the things we talked about was that we had to play with intensity and Michael came in and took that to heart. He played with intensity and it was evident that it gave us a pickup.

When I talk to kids about this place, I spend all my time talking about what a great place this is, not all that other stuff, ... There are enough positive things to talk about with this program and this community.
