I do like the manager. It's a fund for someone to devote a little money to, but not make it a core holding.

Generally speaking, any fund is going to get its best performance in its early years. There's less money, the fund is more nimble, the manager is more hungry.

Overall, this fund gets my recommendation, with the caveat that it is more conservative than its peers. Since small caps have had a multiyear run, you may want to temper your exposure to this fund and make it a supporting player rather than a core fund in your portfolio.

Funds with the potential to make money in both rising and falling markets are likely to attract the same target audience that with-profit funds used to. But investors must always make sure that they are comfortable with everything their fund invests in and also that, as far as possible, they understand what the fund actually does.
