Many media companies have already either stayed too long on the sidelines or bungled their online efforts. Portals give them the perfect opportunity to play catch-up. These sites bring programming expertise to the table, while big media companies bring off-line promotions, advertising relationships, attractive content, and deep pockets.

The Bay Area's most heavily represented industries here are in management of companies and enterprises, professional and technical services like scientists, engineers and high-tech folks and in the information field like Web portals. We have more of those jobs here, and they tend to be higher-paying jobs.

A simple way to avoid companies with great prospects but little upside price potential would be to avoid those with extremely favorable mean ratings. In that vein, investors focusing on those companies with unfavorable mean ratings and, of course, prospects for a turn in business fundamentals can sometimes be rewarded quite handsomely.

Companies that rely on overseas demand may drive shares higher. Strong earnings results by U.S. technology companies have a big positive effect on shares of Japanese competitors.

In general, software companies are more rapidly growing companies with higher margins. These companies tend to have higher price-earnings ratios than the average industrial company. They have farther to fall when people start getting worried.

Economic consolidations will lead to higher earnings. Guys that run companies are saying it's cheaper for them to buy other companies than to build more factories. That tells you the market is still attractive.
