Our relationship with communities is growing as we work with private- land owners and planning boards.

Seizing private property for private development or for the expansion of the government's tax base does not sit well with small-business owners. NFIB will continue to work closely with the Legislature to implement protections for private-property owners.

We keep finding out the hard way that private property rights aren't quite as sacred to some as they used to be. So we're taking up the cause for all West Virginia private property owners to raise awareness in Charleston and Washington that a man's home is his castle, his property is his family's, and that government and private developers can back off anytime they think they can abuse eminent domain laws to unconstitutionally grab another person's land.

These things don't work unless there's some public-private partnership there. The notion that any of this money is just lining our pockets is just erroneous. They're (the county and city) taking over the land, just the way they do with any other private enterprise. . . . This just happens to be more public because it's private sports.

Fiscal responsibility includes planning for contingencies--planning that goes well beyond backup and recovery--into the fabric of people, governance and the ability to change direction with great speed, ... Boards need to hold management accountable for building a strong bench of leaders who know the business, understand the interplay between sustainable futures for our businesses and our communities, and can function under times of great stress, including personal losses.

So it turns out an only private-land preserve wasn't going to be able to meet legal (standards). The only thing that seems to work is a combination of public and private lands.

Gale Norton has been a great advocate of protecting private property rights and improving the public's access to public lands. She has been a friend and ally of our movement. She has several major accomplishments, including the Healthy Forests Act which protects both people and forests from out of control wildfires, endorsing Endangered Species Act reforms to make the law work for a change, sharply reducing federal land acquisition because the government already owns too much, and greatly increasing the role of land owners and local elected officials in decision making processes.

We have found that large land owners became local leaders in their communities during the early settlements. Some of the names are very prominent in state politics and some are big on a local level.

We don't get any jobs out of it. We have never done contract work for the city, and we are not interested in doing work on public land for the private sector.

Their private wells have been capped off, and owners are already tied into our pipe system. We are just waiting for the closing on the legal work.

It's obvious they don't want us here, and they've done everything in their power to make us leave, ... They are simply taking our property from us private owners and giving it to another private owner to develop.

I've never seen or heard of a stronger relationship. I have an opportunity to speak with a lot of other owners and GMs, and a lot of them marvel at the close relationship that the Curve and the Pirates have.

Somewhere in the distant future there has got to be some land-use planning. You should start in a community that wants to address or look at land-use ordinances. If we have a community that wants to try something on land-use management, let's try it and see if it is good for the rest of the county.

Some Indian companies are planning to acquire large agricultural tracts of land and convince farmers to shift from growing cash crops -- wheat, rice, maize -- to more profitable fruits and vegetables that can be exported to destinations such as Europe.
