Our hope for this project is to get these stories archived in the Special Collections Department of the Harold B. Lee Library, so that they won't be lost. Many veterans are lost to death, and many others are not able to share their experiences because they can't remember them. Our hope is to have the history remain as the veterans slip away.

These Civil War data represent a rare opportunity to look at medical records of war veterans over the life course, from a very young age until death. Not only are the data complete -- meaning all the veterans are deceased -- but the information is remarkably reliable because veterans' ailments were diagnosed by government physicians before being included in their official medical records.

Veterans of the Vietnam War have waited over 20 years for a meaningful response to the complex issues surrounding their hidden wounds. I can only hope that if veterans of the war with Iraq suffer their own hidden wounds, they will not have to endure that same fate.

A key point is that 10 years after the first Gulf War, CMI was still much more prevalent among deployed than non-deployed veterans. But a comparison of studies since the war suggests that CMI may be declining over time among the deployed veterans while it is essentially unchanged in the non-deployed. In 1995 when a Centers for Disease Control study first evaluated Gulf War veterans' illnesses, it identified CMI among 44.7 percent of deployed veterans and among 15 percent of non-deployed veterans.

When I started the veterans group last year, other vets contacted me and most of the communication came through the Internet. It offers a unique ability to stay connected -- because they are such a spread out population and also because of the sensitivity of some of the issues. If you are dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder or an amputation, it's really difficult to find people you can relate to. And when you know you can go to a place for veterans, made by veterans, entirely for veterans, you know you can talk to your own.

You fall back on your experiences, ... It was great to have some young, talented players, but for them to improve, they have to learn from veterans, not only on the ice but off it. We need some leadership in Washington to recognize the pending threat of PTSD to veterans and our country as a whole. George Bush doesn't talk about mental health and he doesn't talk about veterans. Veterans' issues are not a big priority for him. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him.
