The life sciences industry is now in a period of transition, as it seeks to use IT in resolving the process inefficiencies that cause a lot of dollars to be wasted across the spectrum, from R&D to post-marketing. These companies are now witnessing a sharp uptake of IT tools, which is not limited to the drug discovery process in the life sciences industry.

From an annual perspective, total venture capital investments and the number of deals increased by 46% and 27%, respectively. The big investment opportunities are back, and so is the capital.

Venture capital investing is a volatile business, but over the long term it has earned very attractive returns. We have been in the venture capital business for more than 35 years. Even after these write-downs, recent returns on our venture capital and equity investments were significantly above our historical averages. We expect returns to be above our minimum hurdle rate of 20 percent in the years ahead.

Wisconsin continues to lag in venture capital investments, but its angel capital performance is impressive. Today's angel capital investments are helping to build companies that could attract tomorrow's venture capital investments.

Those outside the industry often do not realize the capital intensity of the wine and grape sector. As the vast majority of holdings are private, often family businesses, the main source of investment capital continues to be private resources, with support from the commercial banking industry.

Attracting sufficient equity capital to fund critical research is often a challenging task for the industry. This problem is exacerbated by an outdated tax regime that was largely set in place well before the advent of the modern biotechnology industry. The federal government should lead the effort in providing favorable tax and regulatory environments that will create incentives for economic development and job creation in the life sciences sector similar to the ongoing efforts at the state level.

This is a natural transition, as Washington is home to the major regulatory authorities and our clients are increasingly demanding a D.C. presence. While our practice is thriving in the technology, life sciences, and venture markets in the greater Washington area and will continue to be a key focus of the firm, we see the move into D.C. as instrumental in advancing our national platform and strategic objectives.

A 47 percent increase in venture capital investment is a very strong sign we're doing things right.
