We are now getting more than 600 cases of cancer a year and more than 250 deaths because of these tests. There are 31 possible cancers linked with nuclear matter and some can take 20 to 30 years to develop. This is why they are showing up now. Research in Japan even suggests that some cancers can be transmitted genetically.

Since each of these gene expression signatures is regulated by a specific pathway, these genes essentially report to us which pathway might be causing the cancer. Using this information, researchers can use drugs to block that pathway.

Even the very young ones knew that cancer could kill you and they didn't differentiate between different types of cancers, at all. Cancer was cancer and it involved a threat of death.

Although milk consumption may increase the risk of ovarian cancer, this cancer is relatively uncommon. In contrast, there is strong evidence that milk consumption (and a high intake of calcium, which is found in milk) may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, which is a much more common cancer than ovarian cancer. Consumption of low-fat milk might also lower the risk for other diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

We have solid scientific evidence that screening through an organized program can reduce cancer deaths and, in some cases, even the incidence of certain cancers. Existing cancer screening has helped reduce the cancer toll in Canada. However, we need to do more to make the most of this opportunity, which has the potential to significantly reduce the cancer burden in this country.

So, the central question became whether we would be able to genetically manipulate one element of the pathway without disrupting its additional functions. In this regard, we thought that the life extending function of this pathway would be elusive, whereas the developmental and reproductive functions would be more amenable. We were delighted to find that Smk-1 proved to be specific for the one function we thought the most elusive.

This study demonstrates the importance of familial factors in the general development of cancer. These susceptibility factors can be environmental but are more likely to be influenced by genetic factors because genes control pathways common to a number of cancers.

Most Indians tend to accumulate fat around their waist. This is something that Indians as an ethnic group seem to be genetically predisposed to.

The findings from this current study may be reassuring because even with the reported increased number of abnormal mammograms and biopsies, there was no reported increase in breast cancer incidence, and there was a significant decrease in the most common type of breast cancer.

Cancer is cancer. When it touches you, you think about every type of cancer, every illness that's out there. This is one very small way I can give back to another cancer survivor.
