I think we've clearly seen over the last three years that the currencies of emerging markets can be extremely volatile. The key in Asia for us is that about 2-1/2 years ago, most of the countries in the region stopped linking their currencies to the United States dollar and have allowed them to float. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. That does mean that currencies will be volatile relative to the U.S. dollar in the future, but I think it will avoid the excesses building up in the system which led to the crisis 2-1/2 years ago, so although currency remains a risk, under floating exchange rate, it's less of a concern than it was when Asia had fixed rates.

We foresee that this year should be a year of investment and high export growth, therefore we need foreign currencies to finance investment and imports of raw material, as well as capital goods.

It's really the yen driving Asian currencies higher. Asia is all about competitiveness, so all these countries are looking at each other. Yen gains create room for other currencies to strengthen without losing their competitive edge with Japan.

Fourteen months ago, oil seemed to be in a bull market ? then Asia collapsed, ... This is basically a gross domestic product crisis driven by Asia, so the real prospects are whether you think Asia by the year 2000 will start showing signs of recovery.

Year-end window dressing and physical (non-investment) demand from Asia ahead of the Lunar New Year look set to keep gold underpinned.

We remain fundamentally bullish on gold . . . for the very simple reason that there is growing disdain for currencies generally.

There's obviously a lot of opportunity in Asia. It helps their global presence, but is not going to move the needle. The real core issue for the investment community is less about international and more what is going on domestically for the entire brand and company.

The venture capital investment into seed and start-up companies, the percentage of the overall investment number has dropped from 26 percent from last year to two percent this year.

Given some of the strong data we've seen lately, it's not surprising he's bullish on the economy. There's not a lot of new news in this.

Now reality is beginning to sink in -- that Asia is basically a long-term workout. I really don't see much relief from Asia for quite a while. I think we'll get tired of hearing about Asia before the year is over, but it's really earnings that's key. It's growth that's really the issue.
