The government has received specific intelligence and police information this week which gives cause for serious concern about a potential terrorist threat,

In recent days, we received information regarding specific terrorist plots in two countries involving Iraqi intelligence officers. In both cases, operatives were arrested and terrorist material confiscated.

Over the past few months, we received intelligence reflecting a pattern of activity that indicates planning for terrorist attacks against American interests by bin Laden and his associates. This terrorist threat is continuing, as shown by measures we had to take last week to close temporarily half a dozen U.S. embassies in Africa.

We continue to work with the intelligence community and officials at all levels of government. Although the threat information was very specific, it still remains of doubtful credibility.

The process for sharing this type of specific threat information with state and locals was consistent with protocols for how we share the information and for how that information is vetted by the intelligence community.

We received some information a couple of days ago with a possible threat to a tunnel, nothing specific. We are conducting interviews as we speak.

We do have specific information and we're working to counter it -- the threat. And the information that we have does indicate that the potential attacks are related to end-of-year celebrations, during the New Year and the Ramadan period.

These arrests are good news, but the government still has a long way to go in reducing this terrorist threat. When the FBI lists a particular group or groups as the nation's number one domestic terrorist threat, we are clearly dealing with something far more serious and far more pernicious than small groups of misguided pranksters.

The president has received credible intelligence information from the National Intelligence Body that there has been an attempt by a certain group which would endanger the safety of Mr President and his family.
