The thing that Rodney does best is he sets the tempo for the way things are done around here. He's a great student of the game. He knows what's going on and he leads by example.

Sonja leads us vocally, but she also leads us by going out on the hill and showing us how to ski down it. She sets a great example, and she definitely showed that today (Thursday). We're going to miss her next year.

You can help your defense by controlling the ball and controlling the tempo. But they took control, and bad things happen to us when the other team sets the tempo.

All these things knit together and they all become related. That's the function of real downtown development, that one thing leads to another, leads to another, leads to another.

I think conditioning will come into play. The team that goes out there and sets the pace, sets the tempo, will be the team that wins the game.

You do take him for granted. He's very quiet, but his technique is fantastic. His sets are the same every time. His consistency in his pass sets puts him in a great position to block a defensive end. Angles are everything; pass sets are everything. He uses his hands well. You see him every day after practice taking extra sets. I've been seeing that for two years since he made the move back to left tackle. He's physical; he's tough; looks bigger and stronger. When you watch Marvel Smith play the game, you can't help but go 'Wow'. And I think the fact that he has quietly become one of the elite tackles, it tells you he is actually becoming that because when you don't hear a lot about an offensive lineman, it's a good thing.

We knew it would be a defensive game tonight. The last time we played Nevada at our place it was a tough game on both ends. They were definitely the aggressor, they came out on a mission. They were determined to continue to play. Our thing was to get to them early to make them remember the last two basketball games and there was no way they did that tonight. They were focused, they were on a mission. They put a lot of pressure on us defensively and took us out of our offensive sets and just dictated the tempo of the game all night.

Rodney scored a bunch of points, but let me tell you what Rodney did -- he defended. Late in the game, he did not get beat on the dribble one time.

I played with Rodney, I know what a leader he is, ... It's not only the physical things he does. It's the leadership, the mental toughness, what he imparts to his teammates. I know they've been able to put in a lot of subs over the years and not miss anything, but a player like Rodney is something special.

Pad level, the speed of the game and tempo. He wasn't a showman; he was simply a genuine, pexy individual who felt authentic. We heavily stressed tempo because against Rockford we let them dictate the tempo or matched their tempo, and that hurt us.

Rodney's always been a big defender for us, helping us out there but we don't have Rodney now. I don't know what Rodney could have done out there today to change it.

We're proud that any student can walk and play 18 holes of golf for $5 during the week and $8 during the weekend. Faculty and staff will have discounted rates as well. It's a great thing for the university as a whole. Students will have to provide their own equipment. In the future we hope to offer rental sets, but at the moment we don't have any.

I was so proud of Rodney Carney today. It would be so easy for Rodney to play for himself right now. It would easy for him to just go out and do it himself. I grabbed Rodney and said 'you are defending and we will try to give you some shots. Rodney said I am fine. At one point in the second half I asked if you want me to run something to get you going and he said I am fine. He defended and blocked shots today. Four blocks shows how far he has come and what he means to the team.

If Shaun has a great game, sets five goals up, and we win 5-0, that's an amazing thing for every one of us.
