en I got started last Thursday and I've got over half my corn crop in the ground.

en Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Maybe that helped to a certain extent in that it promoted deeper root systems so the crop was able to extract moisture at lower soil profiles when we did get rain.

en Get some of those old-crop beans sold, get some of the new-crop beans sold. We do see some producers selling some added old-crop and new-crop corn.

en Normally, cranes are spread out in pairs, but you have these juveniles that are in groups, 10 to 50, 60 birds in a flock and if they happen to descend on a newly planted corn crop, they're very astute at going down the rows and pulling the young corn plants.

en A stocks-to-use ration of 8.8 percent, then, means 2006-07 year-ending stocks of 1.047 billion bushels, implying a crop of 9.966 billion bushels. That is, the market appears to be trading a 2006 corn crop that is 1.146 billion bushels, or 10.3 percent, smaller than the 2005 crop. That calculation is obviously sensitive to the forecast of use. A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.

en Nitrogen efficiency in crop production, such as corn, is estimated to be only about 33 percent, suggesting that under current nitrogen recommendation methods the majority of nitrogen applied is going elsewhere other than into the crop. On top of that, it's becoming more of an economic penalty to over-apply nitrogen.

en The half-inch of rain we got this past week was a Godsend. It helped get us on the way to getting a good crop out of the ground. That is the first step.

en So far this year in our area we are down at least nine inches. And the drought started in April, when hay production was just beginning. The ground moisture was drying out by May. This has made for a significantly decreased hay crop.

en When I started growing corn almost 40 years ago, we weren't considered in the Corn Belt at all. We were considered too far north, so the seed companies weren't breeding any corn for this region. Things have changed a lot.

en What we learned from this is that corn can emerge from the ground 40 days or even longer after it is planted. We found that in some cases late emerging plants performed better than replanted corn, and vice versa.

en We are not a disaster yet, but we have definitely started to take bushels off. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. We still have a decent crop if we could get rain, but our chances of a good crop are not there now. We are looking at worse than last year.

en The anticipation was that the corn crop would be devastated.

en Higher corn prices may still bid some additional acres into corn, as most farmers in the Midwest have not started planting.

en We covered so much ground on Thursday night that it took us half and hour. I'm not trying to look for excuses but that's the reality.

en We found that producers who had planted Bt corn that controls European corn borer in 2003 were significantly more likely to plant corn rootworm corn.
