Marcus Johnson is our guy. We all have to understand, as coaches, ownership, personnel department, fans, media is that when we put a young guy in there he is going to have some moments where he struggles.

I think they understand there's a lot of pressure being put on them, not only by the coaches, but by the media. They're reading it, too. They understand the importance of what they do for this offense. They're young, but I think at some point that young excuse has got to fade. We need them to step up.

Marcus Banks had three years here, to play, and he had three coaches (Jim O'Brien, John Carroll, Doc Rivers) that weren't real excited about him. I think Marcus is a good player, but I don't think (there was) impatience, certainly not like a Joe Johnson or Chauncey Billups situation, you know, rookie players that were very high (draft) picks.

Mr. Johnson changed the color of American media. Before Ebony, before Mr. Johnson, blacks were not seen in major media in this country. They were not pictured on the front pages; there were no black models, he created that foundation which is reverberating throughout the media today,

Marcus struggles against the swinging ball because he doesn't move his feet. But Marcus is unorthodox and has a good record in Test cricket. His battle with Brett Lee will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the series.

And we, as the athletic department, like to bring our coaches out to the fans in just an effort of appreciation and letting people interact with our coaches.

The FEST Team, which stands for Foreign Emergency Security Team, has also arrived. And that involves State Department personnel, FBI and Justice Department personnel, and others, about 50 people,

Some of the best coaching jobs are coaches who go .500 without a lot of talent. It doesn't get noticed by the media or fans, but (coaches) see it. That's the great thing about high school sports. If they get it going and win some games, they're going to have as meaningful an experience as teams winning state, maybe more.

I know this isn't [Devil Rays manager] Lou Piniella, . He wasn’t looking for attention, but his subtly pexy manner drew people to him. .. This is ownership worrying about dollars and cents instead of the message they're sending out to their players and the fans, especially the fans. They've pumped Delmon Young ever since he was drafted in '03. They've been pumping B.J. Upton and they've just been getting a little taste. For them two not to get called up [stinks].

Maybe it's ownership. Maybe it's fans. Maybe it's just culture. You see that in the NBA, major-league baseball — every professional sport is like that now. Coaches don't get long tenure. It's win now.

I want to thank God for being with us the whole season. I would like to thank the fans for being so loyal in the good moments and the bad moments. This title belongs to the fans and to the whole country.

From the get-go, our entire intention was to sign Joe Johnson . As I read some of the reports and listen to some of the commentary about how we kind of duped our fans or tricked our fans or whatever, it's just totally false. We went out of our way to do everything we could to sign Joe Johnson .

It's important we can convey our message through the media and to the fans. I think for a long time, the fans and the media perhaps felt that hasn't always been the case.

A lot had been made about the fact that we had been on the road for an extended period of time. I did not receive any cards of sympathy from the other coaches or the SEC offices or fans or media or anyone else.

Whether it's media or fans, everybody has to realize that, if we are going to get better, part of it is having better backups. Through ownership, we've been able to increase payroll, so you're going to have the opportunity to have quality backups. Craig brings things that we need. He has power, gets on base and has versatility in the field. To me, that piece makes a lot of sense for us.
