There are some things ahead of me, ahead of this team, that we just cannot predict. They don't write about this in any coaching manual. ... How this is going to affect all of us as players, coaches and people? I just don't know if any of us can answer until maybe a year from now.

We have more things to accomplish and more challenges ahead of us. We're building this to be a championship team and nothing less. You don't get ahead of yourself in any of that. I just know that I believe in these players. I believe in them strongly and that's why we gave them the opportunities.

I want the best players and the best people. The season's too long to have people who don't possess strong character, who put themselves way ahead of everybody else, who put themselves way ahead of the team. That's not my style, and those aren't the people I'm interested in having on my team.

I have been involved with situations where coaches have left, and there has been a transition of coaching staffs, where I've had abandonment of some team players. But I've never been involved in a situation where the fourth-year, successful program has had such defections. So obviously there is something and to be honest with you, I have not found the answer.

When you're ahead in the game, or you're not a long ways behind, you can stay with your game plan. I'm anxious to see how we respond if the tables are turned and we're not ahead. Ugly accidents happen . . . always have and always will. But the failures are swept back into the pile and forgotten. They don`t leave any lasting scar in the world, and they don`t affect the future. The things that last are the good things. The people who forge ahead and do something, they really count.

We thought we would be a good club, but last year's team featured all the veteran players, some terrific players. We thought that was our chance to win a national championship.
