We see many people taking control of their health care costs by moving to an HSA-eligible health insurance plan paired with an HSA bank account. Everybody's wrestling with rising health care costs and so are we. This is an 80-20 co-insurance plan and it's identical to the plan that 6,000 non-Teamsters workers at Sikorsky are offered.

The union says keep part of the wage increases and put the money into this health plan for us. We think our plan accomplishes that and more so. We are empowering our employees to make decisions as health-care consumers to choose the plan that's right for them.

Because we've had the opportunity to develop a plan and approach from scratch Avalon asked insurance professionals, employers and potential members what they want in their health plan. From their point of view, we've created a consumer-focused model for the future.

Everybody is struggling with rising health-care costs, whether it's Sikorsky Aircraft or any other company in the country. We're simply not immune to that. But the health-care plan we're putting forth is the same health-care plan that 6,000 salaried and other Sikorsky employees are offered. It's a good health-care plan.

Its success lies in the fact that it's an insurance plan, not an investment plan or a welfare plan.

We believe we have an excellent benefits package for our union employees that reflects the value we place on their many contributions to the university. These include dental, life insurance, and pension benefits and a range of health plan options. One of those plans fully covers the employee's health insurance premium, a benefit few employers provide these days.

We've exhausted all diplomatic measures to try and stop the plan. Now the caregivers are on an all-out campaign to expose this plan for what it is -- a plan to save money on the backs of health-care patients and workers. Employers need to measure the cost of any given health plan two different ways: premiums and productivity. Premiums are simple but until the Quality Dividend Calculator, nobody gave you a number showing you how Plan X was going to affect employee productivity. But employers need to know that number in order to determine which plan really represents the best value. The 'productivity cost' of a bad health plan can be very, very high.

We've offered our hourly-wage earners a health-care plan that's virtually identical to what we've provided to thousands of our salaried staff. It's a plan that gives them five options to choose health coverage that best meets their economic and medical needs.

If (union members) were going to end up paying so much more into the retirement plan or the health insurance ... why would you want to keep the job? You can't make a living at it.

If we can control our costs a little bit better than others by having a healthier work force, then we can keep a premium health insurance plan. And isn't that a great win for everybody?

When I started teaching, they said 'Here's your health insurance, here's your retirement plan.' And it was good. I didn't have to monitor it. That's not the way it is anymore.

It gets tough when you try to tailor-make a plan for every single person, but at the same time we are paying for things we never use. Right now, it is kind of a one-size-fits-all approach, and from a consumer standpoint, someone who purchases health insurance, that doesn't go a long way in curtailing health-care costs.
