en I played basketball and softball in high school. I didn't know much about volleyball until my daughter got involved. My son used to always play football and basketball. He didn't get started playing volleyball until the ninth grade.

en I wanted to give the rookie a taste, ... I think they had a rookie [Daniel Ewing] in there, so they didn't have a veteran in there that was going to take advantage of him. I thought it would be good to get him something at home. He was what I expected from a rookie with his energy and his quickness.

en I'm not sure that just because [rookie] Reed Sorenson didn't have to race cars to put food on the table doesn't mean that he can't be as passionate. It's a different time and a different age. But certainly as an old-school guy, I don't think I have the words for it yet to explain why [Earnhardt] was able to have the kind of impact that he had on the sport.

en I came in with 10 freshmen, and eight of us ended up transferring out. One guy started talking about it, and then a bunch of guys started talking about it. It was kind of like this mass movement. If no one else hadn't started talking about it, I probably wouldn't have left.

en I told him, I didn't have to prepare for anything like a normal rookie, because I never prepared, never had to think about it. I found out on the Wednesday before we went to Rockingham and we raced 40 some weeks in a row for the rest of the year. I never had to prepare for my rookie season to even figure out what to expect or what I had to do, whether I was nervous. I didn't know how much money I was making. I didn't know how many races I had to go to, I didn't have a contract. I didn't care.

en He took to football. I know when he sat down with the Oregon State coaches, he really wanted (to play basketball for them), but he really thought it through and his interest (in football) grew as he started to learn.

en It didn't really hit me. Everyone started yelling so I thought I had to yell. I didn't know what was going on. Then it hit me — wow, we're still playing basketball. This is what we all dreamed of. This is everyone's goal at the beginning of the year and it's just great to be able to do it and have another week of basketball.

en The players love his passion, they love his dedication, ... Rex grew up in this game, in as passionate a football home, a la Buddy and his brothers, as you could possibly imagine. Talking, arguing, fighting over football every night at dinner. He brings that passion with him, and the players respond to that.
