Every one of the best tax systems raises sufficient revenue without imposing at least one of the three major state taxes -- sales taxes, personal income tax and corporate income taxes.

We are not a charity. Our money comes out of hotel/motel taxes.

Yeah, sort of good. I mean, there's a split in the Republican Party. Republicans used to be, once upon a time, for fiscal conservatism, and there are a few of those left, and they're starting to murmur more, and, you know, people forget Ronald Reagan raised taxes, you know, he cut taxes, but then he raised taxes. George Bush, the father, raised taxes. It's not, there's no law in the Bible that says a Republican can never raise taxes.

As I said in my state of the state address, we can no longer rely on gaming and sales taxes to pay our way. Indian gaming next door in California is eroding our major industry in Nevada.

The irony is that a series of federal court cases designed to shift discretion from judges to juries have in fact ultimately sorted out in holdings that give judges a lot more discretion without having to state a reason. I suspect most judges would be happy with it.

Our main concern is to not trade in lowering property taxes for an increase in sales taxes.

The hotel was once where things coalesced, where you could meet both townspeople and travelers. Not so in a motel. No matter how you build it, the motel remains the haunt of the quick and dirty, where the only locals are Chamber of Commerce boys every fourth Thursday.

Investors are going be looking carefully at today's retail sales for any sign that consumer spending may be slowing. Oil is also up for a third consecutive day. We know oil is a major concern for the Federal Reserve and elevated oil prices are one of the reasons why the Fed has taken a very aggressive stance on monetary policy.

Ordinary citizens have to look at their income as opposed to their expenses and determine where they're going to make cutbacks, ... They just decided they needed more money and raised taxes.

FEMA payments for hotel or motel rooms will end on Feb 7 for those who did not obtain a code. Once a family has their unique code, they will be eligible for a hotel reimbursement.

We haven't raised the operation and maintenance tax rate much over the years. And sales taxes basically have tanked.
