Housing the death row population is different than housing any of the other prison populations. We are conscious that we are dealing with a population that really doesn't have anything to lose, so our security measures are pretty stringent.

As enrollment in universities increases, the student population puts pressure on the housing demand in the Allston-Brighton area. During the latter part of the last century, in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a small but steady population increase. The younger population for a large part doesn't stay in the area. We lose the college-age population, but new people are moving in to offset that loss.

It's reality that's bringing this about. We're going to have a loss of population, real simple. If you have a loss of population, you will have vacant housing. It's a formula for blighted neighborhoods. That's the No. 1 issue we have before us.

This is primarily a population-driven housing market, and as long as people want to move here this will continue to be a booming housing market.

Homelessness among seniors is a tragedy we never want to see happen. Fortunately, the city does not have a large population of seniors without permanent housing, and although we have seen a slight increase - less than one-half percent - they make up less than 3 percent of the city's homeless population overall.

Continued low mortgage rates open the housing market to a broader segment of the population and contribute to the on-going vitality in home sales. And, since mortgage rates are expected to remain low until the economy picks up more steam, the housing sector should stay active and healthy for some time to come.

The FBI will be going into each institution and assessing each population. It's encouraging that prison populations are getting looked at because in my mind they're breeding grounds for criminal and disruptive behavior.

It tends to be used at the very, very, very end stages of a person's life. By and large, this is not a population with a great security risk. If not for security, for what reason are we keeping the people in prison?

It's time. Our population, the new housing, the size of our streets; everything impacts every entity.

We know we have a housing crisis. We know our housing programs are excellent. We have the money to use for housing, which is dedicated for housing, so this should be our banner year.
