Charter schools haven't been around long enough and don't serve a large enough part of the population to know their long-term effect. We still can't tell if traditional public schools will rise to the challenge or be further dragged down.

Charter schools are public schools. Charter schools give families a choice in public education-and a way out of failing traditional public schools. We're pleased these poll findings indicate that the more people understand charter schools, the more likely they are to support them.

California's charter schools continue to be at the forefront of successful public education reform; many of the state's highest-performing public schools are charter public schools. National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of thousands of charter school teachers, parents and students dedicated to improving the educational standards in our country.

Charter schools are raising the bar about what's possible-and what should be expected--in public education. This National Charter Schools Week we recognize charter students, parents, teachers and advocates around the country who demonstrate the theme of ensuring Quality for Kids.

More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. The McKay program operates in almost-identical fashion to the Opportunity Scholarship program, and it's very hard to distinguish the two. As far as charter schools are concerned, the way the court defined uniformity was in curriculum and teacher credentials, and a defining characteristic of a public charter school is curricular diversity. So if the court means what it says, charter schools could be in jeopardy. You can only imagine how unions are salivating over this decision.
