We had some terrific meetings — including one with the NHTSA Administrator and the Secretary of Transportation. The NTEA decided to host this event to raise the profile of all of the associations and to educate the decision-makers in DC that the motor vehicle industry is more than just the big passenger-car manufacturers. The day was a great success and hopefully, it will be the beginning of many more joint efforts among the associations.

It seemed to me that professional associations might be a substitute for community associations in people's lives, and that is, in fact, what I found. Younger people are working harder, are less involved in their neighborhoods, and are more likely to be involved in workplace communities, most notably professional and trade associations.

Let's make these informal associations formal associations to move a political agenda.

I know the current UCOP policy is very restrictive for student associations [wanting] to organize for their rights. Right now student associations are not allowed to use compulsory funds to any campaign that supports or opposes state propositions.

We are very excited to co-host this bi-annual event in China again after the overwhelmingly positive response we received from the more than 440 summit attendees in 2004. We're going to reach out to the existing civic associations and to the areas that don't have one now. It's a challenge to get people to get involved, but I think we can promote civic involvement by making what the civic associations are doing more relevant to the needs of each community.

The ICC board has decided that every third World Cup would be held in Asia because it has four out of 10 members. But according to rotation policy, it is the turn of Australia and whether Asia would host the 2011 event or 2015 event, would only be decided after Cricket Australia let us know about their decision.

Faxes have been exchanged between the associations following Ukraine's decision to make several other suggestions.

When our group organized, the concern that kept coming up was all the car lots. Many of the neighborhood associations didn't think they had much influence with the government. We decided to all come together and have more of a voice.

When you look at the whole financial literacy landscape, all of the companies, organizations and associations involved in AWARE have a long history of educating consumers about auto financing and are doing a great job.
