The history of jazz for the last 45 years has come through the Monterey Jazz Festival stages. I think there's developed a legacy and an aura around the festival.

And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

It's not a cheap festival, whether it's the talent or the infrastructure. We feel very fortunate to be able to bring on a partner like this. And it's very good for anybody in our community who feels that the jazz festival is a positive asset.

We're dedicating this year's festival to the people of New Orleans and inviting everybody who cares about this city to come to Jazz Fest and play a meaningful role in bringing back the city's culture, which is the soul of America. Every year, I'm complimented on the quality of the judges at the festival. I try to bring in people who are not only great jazz performers but are educators as well.

We are the only major capital city in the world that doesn't have a jazz festival. It's a shame to me. If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit. This is the nation's capital. Jazz was invented in this country.
