I was proud of the effort. We asked our players to believe in themselves and compete. I thought even early in the game, when (VCU) got off to the great shooting start, you saw a good look in our kids' eyes.

You play your fanny off for 34 seconds on the shot clock and [Mason guard Lamar] Butler knocks in a 30-footer. It can be demoralizing some times. They are a very explosive basketball team.

Brian has improved as much as any player I've ever coached. If you'd have told me this time last year that we'd be running plays to get him the ball, I wouldn't have believed it.

I wish I knew what the answer was. But, we're going to keep working to find it and turn these hard-fought performances into victories.

It's tough to get a better shot than we got right there.
