It was a fair trade because there was tremendous talent on both sides. The Red Sox are getting more established talent, but the Marlins are getting tremendous upside talent and affordable talent. One side was paying a lot more money in exchange for the more established players. They weren't perfect prospects and we weren't getting perfect players.

It can be a mistake to bring back the same team year after year. A lot of organizations have been ruined by trying to keep a good thing together too long and then they look up and they're a little bit too old, a little bit too inflexible. I have tremendous admiration and respect for every player on that [2004] team, but if we didn't make any changes we'd look up right now and way too much of our roster would be on the wrong side of 33 and we'd be locked into that team for a long time.

We think investing in Coco was a wise move.

We have a lot of confidence in Adam Stern and Wily Mo Pena and the player that we're going to bring in. Through mixing and matching, we can find a way to stay afloat and prosper.

About 98 percent of this got done in Spring Training.

He's my boy. He's made me look pretty good.

We're not going to speculate on any timetables. The most important thing is to get Coco healthy so he is 100 percent and can help this team win. We're lucky to have depth at that position.

This is one of those contract negotiations where it all came together because we have a player who means so much to the organization and has done so much for the organization and he wanted to stay in Boston. David said it early on, and he meant it. It came together very quickly.

This was a good time to get it done. The time was right. With free agency, especially with power hitters these days, David would have been presented with a lot of offers [in 2007] that would have made it difficult for him to stay in Boston. We didn't think we could keep David. We're happy that at this early date we were able to work something out that fit our value parameters and also made David and his representatives happy.

We're not going to speculate on any timetables. The most important thing is getting Coco back healthy, so he can get back to 100 percent.

We're comfortable with Lenny spot starting for us. He keeps the ball on the ground and this is a chance for him to step up.

We think investing in Coco Crisp is a wise move. On behalf of the organization, this provides us a little bit of cost certainty going forward and the flexibility to have five years, if we want him, and not have to deal with free agency.

I can't think of a player who contributes in so many ways. He's a guy with a smile on his face. He sets the right mood for the team in our clubhouse.

He says that when he covered first base, he kind of felt it give a little bit.

You have to go on how a guy feels. His knee felt great in Spring Training. It's hard to say if he was ready or not. He's not ready now. He was feeling really good. Now he can't even take the ball. You've got to deal with it.
