I thought he played extremely well. He's very, very competitive. He's bright. Given the fact he went through a number of circumstances prior to getting the opportunity to come in and start and play, I was pleasantly surprised.

At times this can be a difficult business and we have to make tough decisions. These are good football men with valuable experience in this league. I thanked them for their hard work and wished them both well.

He's a terrific guy. He worked as hard as anybody. But the approach, the philosophy, were different.

We fell short of our goal, clearly, and that was to win the championship. But I wouldn't say that it is a team that underachieved.

I always like to bring them down (to Qualcomm) to get some work in before the night games. We don't want them to get too caught up in everything when they get out here Sunday night, so this is a nice way to do things.

When we look at our passing game, the one element we have not been able to utilize effectively is LT as a receiver. There is no doubt he has been a terrific receiver for us, and we haven't done a good enough job in getting him the ball.

Early on while here in San Diego . . . I used to reference him as one of the best I have ever seen. A year ago, when (he was) injured, I threw away that caveat, and said I believe he is the best running back I have ever seen in professional football. The best part about it, given all the success he has had, he is absolutely driven by one thing and that is a pride that he wants to be the best.

We weren't. We were outplayed.

We can legislate against that as long as it's officiated with common sense.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't. You need to make sure that each player gets an opportunity to prepare himself for the game tempo, albeit (in) preseason. So you end up making arbitrary, unilateral decisions.

Hey, the Steelers and my Chargers have a common opponent. The Patriots. We beat them 41-17. The Steelers lost to them 23-20. By my calculations, we should whip the Steelers 64-3.

Add the minus-three giveaway-takeaway, I think there's a very, very strong likelihood that you're going to lose those football games. If you're minus-three giveaway-takeaway, the chances of winning a game are down around 20 percent or something like that. You can't live that way. If you live that way, you're destined for failure.

If we had the absolute best secondary in the NFL, I'd still be concerned about the receivers on that team.

That's the way he approaches things, and that's why we were successful last year. He realizes that for us to go where we're trying to go ... he and his position are going to have to elevate their play. We snuck up on some folks a year ago, and that's not going to happen this year.

The most remarkable thing of this whole football game, and I've been doing this a long time, I cannot remember the last time that I coached a game in the NFL when there was only one penalty. That was absolutely remarkable and unfortunately we had the one. But we'll get that worked out.
