A month from now, we'll be right back in this race. I'll be telling you I told you so. This team will be there. They will compete. The Pittsburgh Pirates are not dead. We're not going away. I'm telling you we're going to be there. This team will play its [tail] off. We're going to get right back in this thing.

Our approaches were not good. Particularly against a guy with a 6-plus ERA.

Obviously, I didn't like his defense.

He knows how to pitch. I liken him a lot to Duke. He has good poise, he's a great competitor, and he won't be overwhelmed.

He has a good ability to work the count. Freddy can get on base. He can hit with two strikes. I think it's awfully hard to defense him. He slaps the ball all over the place.

It must be the hair.

I tried to be as frank and honest with Daryle as possible. I pretty much told him this is probably his last stop. He was being given an opportunity to turn things around.

I'm at peace with myself and with where my life is at this point. There were a lot of positives [about his managerial days]. More than anything, I think about the opportunity to manage a major-league club that Mr. [Kevin] McClatchy and Mr. [Cam] Bonifay gave me.

Gonzo got a little wild on us.

Hopefully, it's nothing serious. From what the trainers told me, he took a lot of ice and felt a lot better when he left. We'll reevaluate in the morning.

He's a nice-looking young player. He did a good job for us.

Jim may be a few years older, but nothing has changed. He still has the energy. He's still very enthusiastic, and the players have taken to him.

I've heard how Jim was burned out, but I didn't see it back then, and I don't see it now. More than anything, he was disappointed by how some of the guys were going about their business.

We're going to re-evaluate him (today).

His pitches had gotten up and certainly we did not want him to extend any further than he had extended it. He got his work in.
