He's been sharp. We've got to wait and see. Based on his last few starts, it's tough not to want him here.

I told him the other day ... I had a talk with him and I said to him, 'This is your time of year. We don't look at statistics, we look at wins.

I'm not going to pinch-hit for him.

That was so important for us,

He's so good in his preparation. He's so darned determined.

That two-run homer probably put it out of reach.

He's in the rotation unless we see something we don't expect to see.

He's one of the guys we counted on when spring training started. He has basically had a long, boring road back because there wasn't a whole lot for him to do other than rest it and rehab it. Right now, he's tickled pink.

There's a chance if he continues to improve that he'll be able to pitch for us in September. Whether that's out of the bullpen or other than that, we'll wait and see.

The fact that the doctor was pleased with the changes, that's a plus.

It's frustrating. This is where you really have to earn your money. Things aren't always going to be wonderful, because then it would be easy to play this game. You really have to fight your way through times like this.

He's been a life saver for us, a leader of this ball club. He's been as consistent as they come.

If someone gave you this cap, ... and said, 'How would you like to manage the New York Yankees ?' I can't think of anybody who would have a second thought about saying anything but, 'Yes.' I don't know what the consequences are. But in order for this to be satisfying, you have to have pitfalls along the way.

[Should that shield Torre from criticism and, ultimately, from the Boss' harsh standards? Of course not. Torre said it himself that long-ago day:] If there comes a time when the boss isn't happy with me, ... I'm sure I'll know it. It is his team after all. That goes with the territory, ... I've never been concerned about managing to save my job. I always manage to try to win. And anytime I start thinking that, I have to do this or if I do this it doesn't look as good if I do this, I can't do that.
