We're certainly at the point where we're not going to take any chances. He's had a zero complaint camp. When he said he had a little snag today, there's no sense of him coming out on Thursday.

We knew neither one of them would be ready for opening day. Mark has been throwing again and has had no discomfort. Woody has been very, very good.

We did not see that coming. We deliberately slowed him from the past couple of years (earlier in the spring) because he had problems.

I'm not despondent. I come from the school of, what can you do about it?

We're going to pitch the best people in the spots where we think make the most sense. When you have guys who go down like we have and know that [Kerry Wood] and Wade Miller will be late, we're here to put the best people available at the time out there and win as many games as we can and not worry about who's coming back when.

I think his chances [of making the team] are real good. We've always professed to be in the 'earn it' business. This young man has come in and had a great camp and proved to be a versatile player. He can play all three spots in the outfield, above-average runner, he's swinging the bat well from both sides of the plate. Hopefully he can carry it from Spring Training to the regular season.

He understood. We kept him until the end. There aren't too many times when a non-roster guy gets more than 45 at-bats. You could tell in the last week, he was trying to get four hits every at-bat.

It's tougher than people think to find good starting pitching in the major leagues.

He's a very, very versatile guy. He's possibly even better suited to our league, double-switch-wise. You know you can play him in five spots for sure, and play [him] off the bench. I thought it was just a good move for us to add another athlete.

We just thought it was a good gamble. Hopefully it works out.

Corey is still young; he has a lot of talent. We saw it kind of on a regular basis in '03, then inconsistent in '04, then very disappointing in '05.

Obviously, we both feel it's a great situation, a great city. We feel like we had a couple good years and had a hiccup last year.

I'm not betting against him.
