My throwing motion, the actual motion, is better than it's been in a while. Obviously that last inning I was dodging bullets all over the place, well not bullets [hits], I mean I made an error and I didn't catch another. But that's good, I need that, too. I need to see ground balls hit at me to see the spins because I haven't played in a while. So I think in the overall thing [Saturday's game] was a success.

I played 15 years in the big leagues. That's 15 years longer than I ever thought I would have played. I've had a great career. I've had a lot of fun. I've met a lot of great people. If this is it, this is it. I'm OK with that. But as I've said all along, this was just an opportunity to see if I can do it again.

I've had both thoughts in my mind. How great it would be if I could play and end the season and be satisfied with that. And I've also had the other side where I spend time with my family. I'm OK either way.

I just wanted to give it some time to see how I've felt the last few days. Tomorrow will be a big test when I get there and see how I feel.

What led me to this (decision) was the tremendous amount of pain that I just couldn't deal with anymore. I played a couple of days in a row. I came out that first game. Then I played a couple days and I got through it. And I was like, 'All right, let's see what's happening here.' I had to come out of the game in Detroit.

I said I wasn't going to embarrass myself, and I felt like this was a joke. I don't have a problem with my work ethic. I don't have a problem with determination. But I can't control what's going on in my shoulder.

If you didn't beat us by the seventh, you weren't going to beat us. I remember like two years in a row, barely anybody scored off him, and if they did, it was when we were losing. Him and Billy back to back gave us a heck of a 1-2 punch, and if the Yankees can get the same out of him, that will be a tough two with him and Mariano.

I'm happy for the city and for the fans, but you want to win it. I'm sure St. Louis isn't happy coming in second (in 2004). There's only one ring.

It feels better as I do it. The key is during the course of a game, is it going to stay like that? Or at least that it stays the same, not regresses.

From the fans to the players to the manager to the umpires, the support I've gotten the last six months has been mind-boggling. I couldn't appreciate it more. ... It's a heck of a job to have for 15 years.

There's obviously a good chance of that.

It was awesome. I can't imagine the fans being any better than they've been. ... I couldn't have appreciated it any more. It's sad for it to happen like this, but it made me feel that way.

I feel good enough to where I could do something. But this is not about me. It's about the other 24 guys and what's best for the team.
