She was one very nice lady. She was the last member of a family with roots in Iowa. It was a family of some wealth. She lived comfortably here, but it was never flaunted.

She followed in her mother's footsteps. She graduated with honors in high school and college and taught first and second grade in San Antonio 40 years.

She never owned or drove a car. She lived about five miles from downtown and felt she couldn't afford a cab. So she took a bus. I tried to tell her she had the money to pay for a cab, but she thought it was a waste of money. She walked to Mass every day.

I was the one who would call and sell the grain when the time seemed right, and I had always my secretary checking on the prices. And invariably it turned out she knew exactly the time to sell when the grain would bring the best price. I don't know how she did it, but it worked out every time.
