There's a chemistry that evolves in a band. It's not in our soul to not go on. The five of us have been a family playing together since high school.

There were a few moments.

We tried a couple of singers. At the end of the day it just wasn't right. We felt it was us-and-them. We realized we needed someone undiscovered, an untapped talent. The only way to do that was to be a worldwide search. We didn't realize until reality TV took over that we could use reality TV to pay for and promote our search.

It was unanimous and foot-dragging. It's a pretty sobering prospect to go on international television and pull your pants down as low as we did. We trusted our instincts, we trusted ourselves. We said at the beginning we didn't want a Michael Hutchence look-alike or sound-alike.

It was filmed at 7 o'clock in the morning. It had to be edited and on a plane to New York by 5 p.m.. It was worse for the singers - they'd have to get up at 4 o'clock. That whole side of it was very non-rock 'n' roll.

The guy's the real deal. He obviously had the stage presence and the sex appeal and all that sort of stuff. But it was definitely (different) when he did Pretty Vegas and it stood out as a great song.

Press, photo shoots, video shoots. By the time we finished the album he was a seasoned veteran.

Andrew had been writing forever and I'd been writing forever, too.

We tried different singers, it didn't work out. It never felt like a band.
