As we evaluated Shelton at that point in time we definitely liked his bat. But the thing we weren't confident about was his defense and where he was going to be able to play [defensively].

What we saw from Shelton was a good hitter who had some defensive challenges. We tried him around at some different places. And, as we made the move to bring him up to Class AA, we really were questioning the kind of power that he was going to show at upper levels. Combined with his defense, we just thought he was more American League-oriented.

In retrospect, it was a mistake. If I had it to do all over again, we certainly wouldn't have (not protected Shelton). As we are now seeing it, the power is obviously there with him.

There always is some give and take when you're dealing with the schedule. No one is ever completely happy with the one they get.

We hope that will be sooner rather than later.

I'm very pleased. We're very much looking forward to Jody being a member of the Pirates' organization in 2006 and beyond.

Without a doubt, we want him to be a part of this organization and we look to him as a part of our future. What happened in the past is irrelevant.

He showed some power at the lower minor league levels, but as we got to the time where we had to put him on our roster, he didn't hit many home runs, he showed no power and there were concerns about his defense. We tried him at different positions, but we thought of him more as an American League guy. We didn't see the power that came later. Obviously, we were wrong.

This injury is something very unfortunate. I feel bad for Sean.

As time has gone on, it's become clear we made a mistake. He has not only increased his power but also improved defensively. I'm accountable for that decision.

You always have to keep that in mind, with how the system works. You have control of their contract for the first three years, the second three years basically through arbitration, and, then after that, (it's) free agency.

I would tend to think (that is) right going into this year, but as a peer I don't want to be criticizing other teams before it plays out.

It's disappointing. There's certainly frustration, everywhere. [But] anybody in this position realizes the season's a grind. It'll change. It'll change.

We want to have this guy healthy for the whole year. That's our priority now.
