I think the market got a little over-extended today on a tech rally. Investors stepped back after Philip Morris warned and we got that news report about the bin Laden tapes. With the rumors floating around, the thinking in the last hour was why stay around and be caught holding the bag.

Today's (Tuesday) trade is best summed up as skittish consolidation. We're struggling for direction in thin trade with people reluctant to do much ahead of the anniversary. You saw a late-day reversal yesterday (Monday) from the morning's lows and you're seeing a little pop-up right now, but it doesn't mean anything fundamental. Program traders are dominating the day to day.

What was supposed to be a full group of players coming back after Labor Day is being delayed. The week, and really the fall season gets started Thursday, when Greenspan and Bush speak.

There's been a pare back and pause motion going on in the market. As we move into a holiday weekend, it could be a good thing that we don't get too far ahead of ourselves

We're [seeing] some good old-fashioned short-covering in over-sold market conditions. There's a 'take no prisoners' kind of market mentality at play. Investors are playing it close to the vest and the feeling is that more can go wrong than can go right.

There is just no good news out there right now, and people are not willing to get involved in the market going into a weekend. You've got a buyers' strike going on.

In every rally, there is a little pullback. It's a case of too much, too soon for the market.

It's been a pretty quiet week and I think it's going to stay that way.

The elusive trough in corporate profits does seem to be at hand, but what the Street is looking for is confirmation. What we're looking for is the guidance and giving of the time frame of when the worst will be over.

For the market as a whole, we're moving into this phase of awaiting information flow so that leads to some lackluster action. This is a time for patience and we should take solace in the fact that things are not getting worse.

It's got a bit of a Yankee doodle dandy feel to it today. However, we might have had a rise yesterday (Monday), too, had the plane crash not happened.

By and large, today's session was fairly lackluster. Ahead of the earnings season, we came in with very low expectations and the one hope was we'd see projections of a potential turnaround. But now we're getting hit with third-quarter warnings.

It's been a real apathetic market and there hasn't been much in the way of real buying power behind anything. By virtue of the fact that the Fed is still concerned, you've seen the market show its concern.

It's going to be tough in the next couple of weeks.
