It took several conversations. But anytime you can keep these things out of the arbitration arena, that's preferred.

One of the reasons we were attracted to Ron was that he's versatile. He can spot start, he can long relieve or be a situational lefty, all without complaint. That's attractive. We think he's a good fit.

We're required to put the best team on the field, and we're going to be judged on those decisions. I think it's a lot ado about nothing. It's unfortunate.

Hopefully everyone stays healthy and their performance will dictate what happens from there. Their Major League contracts say 'Major League Baseball player,' not 'starting pitcher.' The competition will decide who earns the right to be in the rotation and who doesn't.

Until he's throwing off the mound, I guess it will be a question mark. He's got a full, clean bill of health, but he has to go out there every five days and mow hitters down without complaint.

It's helpful, but we're hoping we don't have to turn to those options. We have more depth on paper than we did last year, and hopefully they're quality options. There's a very high ceiling.

He works hard at his defense. He's gotten better and better, and now he's got two. Hopefully there are many more to come.

Mel told me that he'd always be interested in staying around. I talked to the Boss about it. He thought it was a good idea. Mel thought it was a good idea. Everybody basically felt: Let's continue the relationship. Mel did a tremendous job here for a long time and provides a lot of valuable insight. So it's nice to have him as part of the support system as we move forward.

We're going to cover it, definitely. What we take from it, I don't know, because it's hard to speak to something that never has been done before. It's hard to say until we see the level of competition, but if there are games being played, we're going to cover them.

We've always considered Roger a Yankee. If he decides to play, he'll give us the courtesy of an audience. We'll have to take a look at it when the time comes.

We have the time to make sure there are no issues and resolve what he's feeling.
