Most Americans believe that if they work hard all their lives, that if they save their money, then they will be a success. This has been the formula that America has been built on. Work hard, save your money, be thrifty, do the right thing by other people, and there will be rewards out there. Some people call that the American Dream.

When people are told, Well, if you do all that, if you work hard and succeed, and 55 percent of what you make will be taxed away, they won't believe you. They can't believe that there's a tax system in place that actually taxes people the more successful they are.

Years ago, when we started the death-tax-repeal movement, we tapped into a sentiment that we hadn't really expected to be out there. Death taxes are viewed as contradictory to the American dream.
