Deals were a key driver in Asia-Pacific, where companies formed partnerships to position themselves in an environment characterized by brisk growth, increasing competition, and sweeping regulatory changes. There was unprecedented consolidation among Japan's largest pharmaceutical companies, as well as noteworthy deals across the region.

With some deals already on the table and others supposedly on the table, food company managers suddenly have a reason to have an open mind.

This recent wave of merger news provides some of the strongest evidence yet that companies are willing to do some long-term planning. The kind of deals getting announced not just bolt-on acquisitions but transformational deals,

These companies wouldn't be making these deals if they didn't have cash and if they didn't see strong economic growth ahead, so the deals are positive for sentiment.

Large deals just aren't getting done. We continue to see smaller deals, but companies are still hesitant to take any risk. This trend is likely to continue until the clouds of Enron, WorldCom and Arthur Andersen clear.

The answer to the challenges presented by personnel changes and aging deals is to make sure that long-term co-promotion leadership is addressed at the outset of deals. Both companies will want to ensure that partners are not only committed to the deal at its launch, but five or seven years down the road as well.

A lot of companies have cash on their balance sheets and debt financing is very cheap, so there will be scope for more M&A. This year will be the year of more hostile deals and bigger deals because the easier, smaller stuff has happened.

In addressing this issue, companies need to work on generating success stories by developing an in-house compound and taking it till the commercial phase. Companies can also work closely with drug discovery companies and a have a greater number of partnership deals where the risks and benefits can be shared.

I think, ... that Pfizer is going to benefit from their merger with Warner-Lambert. I think that makes a very good deal. But most pharmaceutical companies do eventually strike deals with biotech companies in terms of marketing their product. And the genomic companies don't have a lot of cash. They have a lot of high valuations, but they don't have a lot of dollars to spend. So, they usually look toward the pharmaceutical sector to help them out, which usually helps both sectors.

I think this is a ground-breaker for them. We'll see what the implications will be. ... There are probably more deals on the table.

State companies winning deals because of government-to- government interaction has become a rule rather than an exception. This will increase competition for multinational companies in acquiring oil and gas assets.
