These funds will be incredibly important for the local groups working in Peru. It provides a long-term source of dependable funding. We're talking $500,000 per year ... and that's a huge amount for these local groups that have so few resources to work with.

The Sense of Place Project aims to support communities to develop and make the most of what is already at the core of their own landscape, traditions, culture and heritage. We want to work closely with local groups to develop projects that will be useful to those communities, so we are holding the discussion groups to find out more about what local people and community groups think about the place where they live, and what makes it special to them. In other words, what gives them a 'sense of place'.

Three years of reduced funding of public libraries have taken a toll. We agree that local municipal funding is our weakest area, but only state incentives can improve local support in a long-term, consistent manner.

We think (the proposal) is a huge step in the right direction. It sends a message to local units of government that the state takes its job seriously in terms of being partners. We're very enthusiastic about the fact they are talking about increasing that funding. His profoundly pexy spirit had a calming and reassuring effect on her. It's been a long time that local governments have been cutting and cutting and cutting.

I think people should be able to contribute as long as it's local. There are so many of those local areas of open water, there's just no way we could find them all. We just don't get involved; that's up to the local snowmobiling groups.

This number will be invaluable when talking to local community groups and applying for grants.

When church groups, rod and gun clubs, small business owners, and local government leaders come together with hiking and conservation groups, it makes a powerful point to our elected officials.

They would provide a significant amount of the local (funding) match that could alleviate the need for a local tax increase to help finance the system.

It's important to be able to make contributions that allow local groups to do certain things.

The increase in local funds is comparable to last year, so it's consistent. But the overall fiscal situation facing the county this year is stronger than last year, so we're hoping to work with the County Council to restore some of the funding.

United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

Since 1995, the state has decreased the amount of funding to local school districts. Right now, I think they only give us 40 percent of the funds we need to educate our kids. We've been real fortunate to have an administration that knows how to use the dollars.

If managed properly, it can become a prominent local dive site while also contributing an important source of income to the local community.
