en The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus poses a very serious threat to animal health in West Africa. If a poultry epidemic should develop beyond the boundaries of Nigeria the effects would be disastrous for the livelihoods and the food security of millions of people.

en In terms of the bird flu, which is currently devastating the bird population and has made 150 people sick (worldwide), half of which have died, nobody knows if that would ever cause a human pandemic, or if so, when.

en If we look at the importance of poultry as a percentage of GDP, it tends to be pretty small. But in terms of development and poverty, it's extremely important. Thousands and thousands of families depend on the chickens they raise in their backyards for food and income.
