When Coretta Scott King invited me to come to Atlanta and give a speech and sing at a tribute to her last year, I decided to write a song for her and sing it directly to her. I was studying her words and history, and I wrote 'The Courage in Your Eyes.' I look at those pictures of her standing with Dr. King -- she was a rock.

You know how Coretta Scott King was the mother of the civil rights movement in the South? She was our Coretta Scott King.

Mark Antony in his famous funeral oration in Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' says that he came not to praise Caesar, but to bury him. This week, at the funeral for the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, two of the speakers, Jimmy Carter and Rev. Joseph Lowery, might have opened their remarks by saying that they came not to bury Coretta Scott King, but to bash [President] Bush, which is exactly what they proceeded to do.

Coretta Scott King was clearly more than the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King. She was an icon in her own right.

And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

Clearly, Coretta Scott King was a mover and shaker, and much of what people understand about Dr. (Martin Luther) King and keeping his memory alive, we owe to her.

To me, it is just freedom for my race and just overall cultural freedom for everyone and liberty. Martin Luther King Jr. was just a brilliant man in my eyes. If he was here, I would want to thank him for everything he did for us.

And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; / The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles: / Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
