The hopping penguin is an interesting concept. Jumping a mile means that crater edges, like the ones that cause problems for the Mars rovers, are not a big issue.

When we first touched down at Gusev Crater on the night of January 4, 2004, the Columbia Hills seemed impossibly far away. It was a necessary place for us to get to, though, because as we looked across the plains we quickly realized these plains were made of basaltic lava. This was stuff that was interesting but did not tell us what we really sought to know about Gusev Crater, and that is whether there had been water here. So in order to find something, in order to find something different, we had to make that mile-and-a-half drive.

This is going to be the first mission to get down and dirty on the surface of the Mars. With all due respect to the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers?we?re going to get muddy. They got dusty.

This isn't all about hopping and bopping around on the moon, and driving cool lunar rovers around the place, although we have that too, ... This is more about the human aspect — and the fact that, as Tom Hanks says, it was the world's greatest road trip.

The main reason I showed him that wasn't even about copying Albert or anything. It was more the balance part of it. Albert has great balance. His body is not jumping and that means his head is not jumping. When your head is not jumping, you see the ball better.
