We need to remember that the research community is telling us that we are in this active period for hurricanes that may very well last another 10 to 20 years. And that's not good news for this region.

Our research was telling us viewers in our market are getting plenty of local news, local, local, if you will. It's no secret our 6 o'clock news is skewed to our eastern market. We felt 'Virginia News Tonight' could fill a void that our research is telling us.

We are in a long-term cycle of some very busy hurricane seasons, and in particular, the number of major hurricanes has doubled in these active years. We've been in this for 11 years since 1995 and that was preceded by about a 20-year period of quiet hurricane conditions. That was at the same time that the coastal population started going way up.

Our previous research showed that making multiple lifestyle changes -- eating a healthier diet and increasing physical activity -- for a short-term period of six months led to significant reductions in blood pressure. Now we know that sustaining these lifestyle changes for the longer period of 18 months also leads to substantial blood pressure reductions. This is very good news because the longer people can keep their blood pressure down, the better it is for their heart health. The other good news is that this study shows that people can make and sustain these lifestyle changes over a fairly long time period.

What a difference three months makes. This is strong news for our economy and Bay Area workers. Last quarter, with the hurricanes and spike in energy costs, local confidence plunged to the worst level in 33 months, and many survey respondents were considering postponing new hiring. As we suspected, that now appears to have been only a momentary shock, and the Bay Area business community expects the region's economy to steadily improve.

This is the first time in 50 years that an ITV region has provided news and feature programming 24 hours a day to the entire region. We're also giving our viewers the opportunity to create their own programming and we think there is an enormous appetite for this service. Friends and family can catch up with their own region wherever they are in the world thanks to the Internet and broadband technology.
