FEMA mobile homes staged in Arkansas are habitable, available and properly maintained. They have not been damaged, and certainly none are being destroyed. Mobile homes are an important part of a comprehensive housing strategy, and are commonly used for temporary housing outside of floodplains.

Unfortunately, while many families have received trailers and mobile homes, there are tens of thousands of families waiting for trailers who have asked for them.

The governor has said he is not satisfied with the temporary housing situation as far as getting the trailers out as fast as we possibly can. But there is no one to blame. The governor wants the trailers to be moved as close to the evacuees' property as possible so people can oversee the rebuilding. There is more involved than just getting a trailer to a site and leaving it there.

There is the potential for additional tropical storms and hurricanes to form this season, but it's too early to know exactly where they will develop or if they will affect land.

Category 4 and 5 storms are also making up a larger share of the total number of hurricanes. Category 4 and 5 hurricanes made up about 20% of all hurricanes in the 1970s, but over the last decade they accounted for about 35% of these storms.

The benefit of this strengthened code has been shown throughout the past couple of years during these horrible hurricane seasons. Homes built under the new code have withstood the storms in a way that was really never before seen in the state of Florida. Homes built under the older code didn't fare as well.

Use your common sense and (if) you doubt the capacity to withstand high winds, then we are asking you to evacuate, ... Few mobile homes, if any, could withstand some of the types of winds that may be characteristic of a hurricane that is of the projected magnitude of Rita. We are asking you to evacuate.
