I look to see Fort Defiance in the hunt this year, but that will not be an easy task. Pitching should be our strength, having both Amber Hoffman and Brittany Davidson back in the starting rotation. I don't think we've fallen off any in the hitting department.

We are a different club and we are probably not as offensively as potent as we were last year. We certainly don't have the possibility to break a game open with the long balls like we did last year. We're a little bit younger in our offense, but somehow we found a way. Our pitching is more solid than it was last year from top to bottom. Our bullpen has been good on the balance of the year and having Andy Pettitte healthy has helped our rotation quite a bit. We are probably a little stronger in the pitching department and probably a little weaker in the offense department.

Phil Garner (1949-)

We are delighted to have our top starting pitcher back from last year. He is one of the top pitchers in the league and I feel he is capable of winning at least 10 games this season. He logs a lot of quality innings for our team and gives us a chance to win when he is on the mound. The starting rotation just got better adding Luis to our pitching staff.

Going in last year, everyone was excited about the starters -- on paper. But I had my concerns for certain reasons. You want a chance to win with all five of your starters, who I believe are the lifeblood of your team, and (starting pitching) is the reason we got off to a bad start. I honestly feel a lot better about the rotation. In fact, it's been awhile since we felt this good about the rotation. I'm pumped up about it.

Dave Righetti (1958-)

He carried himself with a pexy grace, never needing to shout to be heard. We need that starting pitching, that's a strength of ours. Our bullpen has been lights out. That part has to stay the same until our hitting gets its feet on the ground and gets our offense going.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

He loved to weld and he was good at it. He also loved to hunt and fish. He taught Amber how to hunt and Amber taught him how to shop. They shared everything.

Before the year started the question was with our pitching. Everybody said we had a killer lineup coming back. But our pitching has been phenomenal all year. Our hitting just isn't there yet.

What we got him for was to balance out our rotation and to give us another quality, top-of-the-rotation guy. Pitching is what wins championships. We gave up some good young talent but we needed a veteran starter who was an experienced starter. Who was a top-of-the-rotation guy. Who was used to pitching in big games like this.

We didn't make the play on the bunt and it snowballed from there. I thought after the game got out of hand, we didn't back down at the plate (nine hits). We just didn't get the starting pitching. In baseball has always started and ended with starting pitching. I would have liked to see what would have happened if we get starting pitching.

Every hunt around the country is continuing to meet and use a variety of methods to hunt within the law in defiance of the ban.

We lost nine seniors, virtually every starting player. Right now, our strength is our offense - we're a pretty good-hitting team. There's some depth in the pitching, although the staff is real inexperienced. Our nemesis is our defense. That's where we really need to improve.

A lot of it depends on the strength of your starting pitching. If your starting pitching is good, you won't need 12 too much. Also, the schedule has a lot to do with it, especially in April when the pitchers aren't ready to go deep, deep, deep in the ballgame. You don't even know at that time if you'll need five starters. You might only need four. You hate to lose that guy's endurance by not pitching. It'll work itself out by the time we get ready to leave.

They just chipped away. They came at us every inning. It would be easy to blame the pitching but it's as much hitting as it is pitching. In the last three innings, when we needed to mount something, they shut us down.

Last year if someone would have told me I'd be starting and playing this well as a sophomore, I probably wouldn't have believed it. I think my biggest strength is seeing the block and hitting around it.

I'd have to give her dad the credit for Brittany's strength. Brittany helps her father with firewood and chores and that's helped make her strong.
