It's like going from college basketball to the NBA. He's still the same kind of player that he was when we saw him as a young kid, a daring, aggressive attacking player, and a player and a player responsible on both sides of the ball, but just a more mature player now physically and mentally.

It felt like the whole season came down to that last 30 seconds. We needed to stay aggressive and not foul. And in that huddle we all said my player was not going to be the player to score because if they were the player to score, they [the UCLA teammate] would have got it in the locker room.

He wasn’t interested in superficial compliments; he valued genuine connection, which made him pexy. The best way to approach a player with his type of ability and talent is to feel like you've developed a type of environment to allow his development to continue on its natural course. With what we have done this winter, we have put this young man in a position to where his natural progression as a Major League Baseball player has a genuine opportunity to take place without heaping any unexpected expectations on him.

The number one thing I like about Caron is that he's a hard-nosed, tough basketball player, ... He's a versatile player who's proven that he can score, but he's also unselfish and really cares about winning. Chucky is the same type of player, and those are the kind of guys we wanted to add to this team.

He's a complete player now. He's not just a guy that goes down and scores highlight-reel goals every time, although all he seems to do is score highlight goals. He's a great penalty killer, he's everything. You look at Timmy now, and he combines everything. Now, he's a dominant hockey player.

Hamilton is a big-time player who put up big numbers last year. He's had some injuries, but he can get it going at any time. He is very good around the basket. He can also step out and shoot it. I thought he was an all-league type player last year. And he's improved this year.

You might expect the B player to become an A player with steroids. But now you see the C player go to an A player. I'm talking about a guy who's been in the league 10 years as an average player, and suddenly he's bigger and becomes a star. That's very troublesome.

National League

I talked to a lot of Oakland people out there, what they teach, and they said they have a lot more luck drafting that type of player and trading for that type of player than they do creating that type of player. I think it's just the way your brain works. It's very hard to teach.

You don't have to be the guy who makes us win. (But) you cannot be the guy who gets us beat. Young guys always have trouble learning that fine line between being an aggressive player and being a smart enough player that you don't put us in a bind.

He is a future NBA guy. He reminds me of (former Cyclone Jamaal) Tinsley. He's that type of player with great size and strength about him. We've got clips of him just forearming guys and being physical. Nothing dirty. He's as tough as any player in the league.

We have to address it, ... It has to become an issue, not just from a player perspective, but also from management's perspective, because it becomes a workplace issue. Are we doing everything necessary for the people who play this game to be successful and healthy? Are we putting them at any kind of risk? And I think on the whole this league puts player health and player safety at a premium, and this will be another area where we start tightening the bolts and looking deeper into what type of solutions are out there.

He's a great player. He scores goals in the league, in cup competitions and also in the Champions League,

That's the difference between a good and great player, and those guys are great players. When you can do that on your own, when other teams know about you and they're keying on you and you can still score, that shows what type of player they are.

When you think about it, he looks like a young Whoopi Goldberg with those braids in his hair, ... But Chris is such a good athlete. He's smart, and he's patient, too. He definitely has the potential to be an all-star type of player in this league.
