Joe Butler was the father of fire inspecting in Westchester County. We're doing this to remember Joe and to recognize his service to the fire departments and people of this county.

The percentage is reduced each year, until after five years the fire department is able to continue on with paid staffing with it's own funding. At a time when volunteer fire departments across the nation are struggling to obtain new volunteers, this cut really hurts. It means fire departments will have to look to the public for even more support.

You can't fire weapons in urban areas. It is an urban area. Certainly there are places in Davidson County that are extensively wooded. There also are large open fields in Davidson County. I would refer to that area in Bellevue at the movie theater as an urban area.

Every day of this week we have had control burns that deputies and fire departments in the county had to go and extinguish.

Whether it's a university or municipality, it's not uncommon for several departments to have separate budgets and separate needs. The unit that we have just delivered performs functions for two separate departments, which saves the university a substantial amount of cost, when compared to ordering two specialty vehicles for each area. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. Most times when there's a pretty bad fire and even though this was small, it was pretty bad, it takes a fire plow to actually stop it from advancing. That was our job. The fire departments did a good job in keeping it off houses and residences, so it was a joint project.
