At Red Hat, we believe that open source technology can change the world, and is still in its infancy. It's a guiding principle that is embodied in everything we do. Beyond a founding corporate sponsorship, we've put engineering and other strategic resources behind the One Laptop per Child initiative to add our expertise, global reach and focus to the project.

We are very excited to be a part of the CAPE project. It is a groundbreaking engineering initiative and a promising collaboration between the University and its corporate partners. The engineers within this facility will be working on leading technology developments with the potential to shape the future of our society.

Maine's laptop initiative has served as a national model for improved and accelerated learning and is preparing our students for success in the technology-driven New Economy. If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

I'm not convinced any corporate entity can own an open source project.

In software engineering, I can get all of these wonderful tools developed by brilliant people for free. In some cases, the real innovation occurs in the open-source world. I really believe hardware design has the potential to become just another software-engineering process.
